Welcome to the digital home of N4YWD. My passion for Ham Radio is a lifelong one, and after some time away, I couldn't be more excited to be back on the air, participating in the community, and exploring the incredible evolution of this hobby. It's a thrill to be sending and receiving signals once again. I invite you to read on and explore the history of my station and the personal journey that has brought me back to the bands.
Every story has a beginning, and my journey in amateur radio is no exception. This origin story forms the foundation of a lifelong hobby, rooted in the hands-on, inventive spirit that defined the early days of Ham Radio. It was a time of discovery, learning, and the simple magic of making contact across the miles with equipment you knew inside and out.
My amateur radio adventure began back in 1969, when I launched my first station after receiving an N3 zone call sign from the FCC. My initial setup was a testament to the resourcefulness of the era, and I quickly got the station on the air with a practical and effective configuration.
Equipment: The station was built around restored vintage radios, bringing classic technology back to life.
Antennas: Simple and efficient tree-mounted antennas were used to get my signal out into the world.
Those formative years were defined by the crackle of the receiver and the satisfaction of building a capable station from the ground up. This foundational experience sparked an enduring enthusiasm that would eventually call me back to the airwaves.
Retirement presented the perfect opportunity to rekindle that original passion and dive back into the world of amateur radio. This new chapter, however, wasn't just about dusting off old gear; it was about bridging the gap between the vintage analog world I started in and the sophisticated digital landscape of today. It represented a fascinating challenge to merge decades of experience with a new wave of technology.
Embracing this evolution meant a significant commitment to modernization. A key focus of my return has been the exploration of new digital modes, which have opened up entirely new ways to communicate and connect with operators around the globe. This transition was a rewarding learning experience that required both dedicated study and practical upgrades. To get the most out of the modern bands, I invested in new equipment and skills to gain full access to the lower frequencies.
This successful transition into the digital age has reshaped the station, blending the best of old and new and preparing it for countless new connections.
With the station upgraded and my knowledge expanded, I am fully active and engaged in the vibrant, global community of amateur radio today. It’s an incredible time to be an operator, with more ways to connect than ever before, and I am enjoying every minute of it.
I am genuinely thrilled to be back on the air, making new contacts and rediscovering the unique camaraderie that this hobby offers.
Thank you for visiting, and I look forward to connecting on the bands.
