Cliff Porter, W3IYI (now passed), was my Ham Radio mentor, guiding countless operators in radio theory and Morse code. His legacy endures through his mastery of CW, a second language he wielded fluently despite being blind. On HF bands, Cliff’s CW was his voice, transmitted at remarkable speed. He never wrote down CW; he simply heard and recalled entire conversations, responding seamlessly. Using his trusty Hallicrafters SX-101A receiver and a ladder-line-fed wire antenna strung from his basement, Cliff’s reception rivaled those with Yagi beams. Those iconic toggle switches on his rugged rig—truly unforgettable!
